The Charlotte, North Carolina native was a pioneering businesswoman and the driving force behind McNinch House Restaurant. After purchasing the historic Queen Anne-style home from the McNinch family in 1978, Davis spent a decade restoring the landmark. She opened the McNinch House Restaurant in January 1989, and – primarily as a self-taught cook – served as the restaurant’s first chef. She said at the time, “I’m living my dream.” The restaurant was her passion. Her legacy and impact within the Charlotte community will live on forever. You are going here for an experience, and your expectation should be very high. The sommelier Wes is a national treasure, and we truly enjoyed our interactions.
Enjoy a delicious piece of Charlotte's history.
Over time it became a popular destination fueled mostly by word of mouth. Serving Budweiser products and the finest call drinks at low prices also contributed to its popularity. McNinch (Sam the First) passed away and was survived by four children, one of whom, Miss Mattie McNinch, never married and resided in the home until 1978. As part of the Fourth Ward revitalization effort, the home was purchased by an enterprising Ellen Davis, who has operated several signature businesses, helping to fund the ongoing restoration.

The property at 511 North Church Street was bought by Vinton Liddell in 1891 for $3,000. The house that stands on that lot now was built by Mr. Liddell and was the residence of the McNinch family for most of its history. Sam Dangremond is a Contributing Digital Editor at Town & Country, where he covers men's style, cocktails, travel, and the social scene. A rambling building a group of hyperactive airline pilots took over sometime in the mid-Sixties and filled with bizarre crap they picked up in their travels all over the world. The Chef’s Table experience requires parties of 4+ guests, and 7 days prior notice.
The low rating is solely based on the preparation of the entrees. We asked for the temperature of the steak to be what the chef recommends and were told it would be medium rare. The lamb entree was cooked perfectly but the coating was a bit underwhelming. We can only recommend 3 (crab cake, she crab soup, lobster bisque) of the 4 (artichoke salad) starters we had, and they were tremendous. The desserts were good, nothing to complain about, but nothing to rave about. We did mention to Wes towards the end of service that the steak was overdone, but we never send plates back to the kitchen. This is a special occasion type of place and you will remember the experience. Unfortunately, for us, the entrees did not live up to the price point.
Prior to completing medical school, Dr. Benjamin graduated as valedictorian with a B.S. In journalism from the respected William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas. He utilizes this concept when working with every patient at Rise in Malibu. Dr. Benjamin is also a certified IGMCA Mental Game Instructor and Life Coach.
His military career culminated in the receipt of the prestigious Reserve Physician of the Year award. The Vision & Philosophy of Grata House is to provide the highest quality in drug and alcohol medically supervised detoxification and residential treatment in a luxury setting. This will be one of our most rememberable dinners - its not our normal style, type of night out, etc. This was the most romantic, authentic, and wholesome dinner we have experienced. The service was amazing.
